Overview
The European Union officially published its Single Permit Directive on 12 April 2024. Under the directive, a third-country worker can apply from the territory of a third country or, if they hold a valid residence permit, from within the EU. If a member state decides to issue a single permit, this decision will serve as both a residence permit and a work permit.
Under a single permit, holders can also change employers without applying for a new residence and work permit. Such a change may be subject to notification to the authorities, and member states may carry out a labor-market check.
EU member states will have two years to transpose the directive into national legislation.
