EU Strengthens Visa Suspension Mechanism
Key Points
- The European Commission introduced a new political agreement that enhances the flexibility and effectiveness of the visa suspension mechanism
Stricter Controls on Visa-Free Travel
On 17 June 2025, the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement to revise the visa suspension mechanism, originally proposed by the Commission in October 2023. The updated rules aim to prevent abuse of visa-free travel while addressing emerging challenges such as irregular migration, investor citizenship schemes and hybrid threats.
Key changes include new grounds for suspending visa-free regimes, lower thresholds for triggering suspensions and a faster, more adaptable procedure to respond to security risks. Additionally, the Commission will now provide regular reports on visa-free countries where concerns arise.
The regulation must still be formally adopted before it takes effect, which is expected 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
