EU Plans Gradual Rollout of Entry-Exit System to Prevent Delays
Key Points
- The EU will implement the Entry-Exit System (EES) in phases over 180 days to ensure a smooth rollout and prevent disruptions
Phased Implementation Aims to Minimize Wait Times and Technical Issues
The European Parliament and European Council agreed to a phased rollout of the Entry-Exit System (EES) on 19 May 2025. As a result, EU member states will all gradually adopt the EES over a180 day period.
The 180-day phased rollout is designed to prevent system disruptions that could arise from a simultaneous launch across all countries. During this period, implementation may be temporarily paused if excessive wait times or technical challenges arise.
The Regulation now awaits formal adoption by the European Parliament and the Council. Once approved, it will take effect three days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
