EU Introduces Advanced Biometric System for Border Security

New Fingerprint and Facial Recognition Technology Enhances Traveler Screening 

The European Commission announced the launch of the shared biometric matching service (sBMS) on 19 May 2025, introducing advanced fingerprint matching and facial recognition for the first time. 

sBMS aims to enhance traveler identity verification, strengthen EU border security and streamline visa and asylum processing. As the first step in the EU’s interoperability framework, sBMS is delivered by eu-LISA, the agency overseeing technical implementation.
