United Kingdom MPs to Debate Petitions on Indefinite Leave to Remain

Key Point

  • The UK held a parliamentary debate on proposed changes to the ILR qualifying period

ILR Pathway Reform Debate

On 8 September 2025, Members of Parliament will debate two high-profile petitions concerning the qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the U.K.

One petition calls for preserving the current five-year ILR route for existing Skilled Worker visa holders, while another urges the government to maintain ILR terms for Hong Kong British National (Overseas) visa holders.

The Petitions Committee approved both petitions for debate on 15 July 2025 after they each received over 100,000 signatures. The government has stated that proposed changes will be subject to formal consultation as part of the Immigration White Paper process.
