U.S. Tightens Interview Waiver Rules for Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Key Point

  • The State Department will tighten nonimmigrant visa interview waiver rules starting September 2, 2025, requiring in-person interviews for most applicants

U.S. Tightens Visa Interview Waiver Rules Starting September 2025

On July 25, 2025, the U.S. Department of State announced a significant revision to its nonimmigrant visa interview waiver policy, set to take effect on September 2, 2025. These updates will tighten eligibility and will require in-person interviews for most visa applicants, including those who were previously exempt due to age or visa renewal status.

What Will Change for the Visa Interview Waiver?

Under the revised guidance, interview waivers may still be granted to:

  • Mandatory In-Person Interviews: Most applicants across all nonimmigrant visa categories (e.g., H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN, E-3, F-1) must now attend interviews at a U.S. consulate or embassy.
  • Age-Based Exemptions Removed: Automatic waivers for applicants under age 14 and over age 79 are no longer valid.
  • Shorter Renewal Window: Interview waivers for visa renewals now apply only if the prior visa expired within the past 12 months (previously 48 months).
  • Consular Discretion Expanded: Even if waiver criteria are met, consular officers may still require interviews on a case-by-case basis.

Who Still Qualifies for a Renewal Interview Waiver?

Visa Type

Waiver Condition

B-1/B-2  Renewal within 12 months, issued at age ≥18, no prior refusals, applying from country of nationality/residence
Diplomatic/Official  A-1, A-2, C-3 (excluding staff), G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6, TECRO E-1

Action Required

  • Apply Early: Interview slots may be limited due to increased demand.
  • Check Local Guidelines: Visit your local U.S. embassy or consulate website for country-specific instructions and updates.
  • Prepare for Delays: Longer wait times and logistical challenges are expected, especially in high-volume regions.
