Sweden Proposes Streamlined Work Permit Rules for 2026
Sweden has introduced draft legislation to simplify the residence and work permit process for third-country nationals. The proposals were announced on 10 June 2025 and are expected to take effect on 21 May 2026, pending final approval.
Key Reforms
- More Flexible Work Permits: When changing jobs or professions, individuals will no longer be required to reapply for a new permit. Instead, they must notify authorities of the change.
- Extended Transition: for Job Loss Workers with a valid permit for more than two years will have up to six months to find new employment before their permit can be revoked.
- A maintenance requirement applies beyond three months, meaning individuals must demonstrate financial self-sufficiency during extended unemployment.
According to the government, these changes aim to reduce administrative burden and improve labor mobility.
