Sweden Implements EU Entry/Exit System for Border Control
Key Point
- Sweden will activate legislative changes on 12 October 2025, to align with the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) for third-country nationals
EU Border Security Upgrade
Sweden has confirmed that it will begin enforcing legislative amendments on 12 October 2025, to support the launch of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). The EES will electronically register third-country nationals entering or exiting the EU for short stays or when refused entry. The system will collect biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs, to improve border efficiency and strengthen internal security.
The Swedish government passed the necessary legal updates in 2022 and has now designated specific agencies authorized to access the system for law enforcement purposes. Officials say the EES will help combat irregular immigration, terrorism and other serious crimes by improving identification and tracking of travelers at the EU’s external borders.
