Norway Suspends Asylum Processing for Syrian Nationals

Key Points

  • Norway has paused the processing of asylum applications from Syrian nationals and stateless persons from Syria due to evolving conditions following the fall of the Assad regime

Norway Pauses Processing Syrian Asylum Applications

Effective 24 June 2025, Norway suspended asylum case handling for Syrian applicants for up to six months, ending 24 December 2025.

This decision follows earlier action by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) on 9 December, temporarily pausing applications amid political instability.

Authorities cite uncertainty and signs of improvement in Syria’s internal conditions post-regime change as the basis for re-evaluating protection needs.

The suspension allows time for monitoring the situation before making further asylum determinations.
