Finland Tightens Family Reunification Rules
Key Points
- Finland is introducing stricter requirements for family reunification under the Aliens Act, effective 16 June 2025
Key Changes to Residence Permits
Finland introduced new amendments that aim to improve integration, prevent abuse and enhance internal security for family reunification. New rules include:
- Minimum Age Requirement: Spouses must be at least 21 years old to qualify for a residence permit.
- Residence Period for Sponsors: Beneficiaries of international protection must live in Finland for at least two years before their family members can apply for reunification.
- Financial Resource Requirement: Family members of minor refugees are exempt, but those of minors with temporary or subsidiary protection must meet financial criteria.
- Definition of Minor: A child’s status as a minor will be determined based on the date of the family member’s application, aligning with EU court rulings.
These changes apply to applications submitted on or after 16 June 2025 but do not affect previously submitted applications or certain extended permits.
