New Zealand Introduces Business Investor Visa to Replace Entrepreneur Category

Key Point

  • New Zealand has closed its Entrepreneur Work Visa and launched a new Business Investor Visa offering two investment-based pathways to residence

Business Investor Visa Overview

New Zealand announced the closure of the Entrepreneur Work Visa and introduced the Business Investor Work Visa to attract experienced investors who will actively run businesses in New Zealand.

Starting in November 2025, applicants may choose from two investment options:

  • NZD $1 million in an existing business; three-year work-to-residence pathway
  • NZD $2 million in an existing business; 12-month fast-track to residence

Applicants may purchase a business outright or acquire at least 25% ownership. Both pathways lead to eligibility for the Business Investor Resident Visa. Officials may grant the visa for up to four years and charge NZD $12,380, including fees and levies.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Meet the minimum investment threshold
  • Have at least NZD $500,000 in personal funds to support themselves and dependents
  • Be 55 years old or younger
  • Meet English language, health, character, and business experience requirements
  • Invest in a business that employs at least five full-time staff

Authorities exclude certain business types, including drop-shipping, gambling, tobacco, adult entertainment, convenience stores, fast food outlets and home-based businesses.

Entrepreneur Visa Transition

  • The Entrepreneur Work Visa is now closed to new applicants
  • Existing Entrepreneur Work Visa holders may still apply for residence
  • Renewals are allowed for those needing more time to meet residence requirements

Officials will release more details comparing the Business Investor Visa and Active Investor Plus Visa in October 2025.
