Belgium Adjusts EES Law Timeline to Align with EU Rollout Framework
Key Point
- Belgium introduces technical amendment to Entry/Exit System law to align with EU implementation timeline
EES law timing adjustment
Belgium approved a technical modification to its legislation governing the Entry/Exit System (EES), originally enacted on 19 March 2023. The update, proposed by Minister of Asylum and Migration Anneleen Van Bossuyt and adopted by the Council of Ministers on 5 September 2025, adjusts the law’s effective date to accommodate phased implementation under EU Regulation 2025/1534.
Next Steps
Certain provisions may now enter into force 170 to 180 days later than initially planned, allowing for a gradual rollout of the EES across EU member states. The amendment ensures Belgium’s legal framework remains aligned with temporary derogations outlined in EU regulations governing border control and biometric registration. The draft law has been submitted to the Council of State for review.
