What are experience letters?

Experience letters are letters from previous employers that prove an individual has specific work experience that is required for a particular job.

For green cards, typically only experience letters from previous employers (not the green card sponsoring employer) are permitted to prove work experience.  There are sometimes exceptions if the green card position for which an individual sponsored is very different from other positions he or she held at that company in the past.

When a green card case is opened, the letters are not immediately requested.  Once the questionnaire is completed and submitted, the attorneys will work to help finalize the job description and requirements used for the green card petition.  At that time, the attorneys will provide a template that for the letters that must be used.  It is important that the experience letters include all necessary requirements, so we recommend waiting to obtain experience letters until the template is provided.

If you have any questions about the content of experience letters for a green card case, please post to the attorneys on your Communication page.
